Debt Collectors can now contact you on social media
In an evolving society where social media and modern technologies have taken a larger role than traditional communication channels, debt collectors have faced challenges when trying to reach consumers under what many consider outdated standards.
A new rule now allows debt collectors to contact you through social media, email, text messages, and, of course, by phone. This rule was approved last year by Kathleen Kraninger, former Director of the CFPB (Consumer Financial Protection Bureau).
When being contacted by debt collectors, the following criteria must be met:
- You can only be contacted through private messages: Debt collectors may only contact you on social media if the message is private. No message may be visible to the general public.
- The debt collector must identify themselves: Debt collectors must identify themselves when sending you a message or requesting to add you as a friend or contact.
- The message must include a way for you to stop receiving communications: Debt collectors must provide you with an easy way to opt out of receiving further communications.
